| Mr Woodhouse with his daughter Emma (Hugh Thomson, 1896) |
It's been a while since I last posted here and the reasons are many and vary. What matters is that I'm happily back and eager to share my culinary adventures with the occasional reader. So here is a quick update for you!
'a very little bit of apple tart' has been and still is a labour of love. The inspiration came to me after reading (and watching the filmed versions of) Jane Austen's Emma. In my introductory post I even shared the passage that gave me the idea of a historic food blod - it was an extract from Chapter 3 in which Emma's father is vividly pictured as the irrational old gentleman who eats nothing but gruel for supper and resents other people eating sugar and fat and I don't know what. However...
Eight years after I created this blog, I find myself in a position not very dissimilar. I would not so far as to discourage my guests from eating rich food but I've come to believe even more in what I have labelled as 'the frugal kitchen'. The main reason is - well, the physician's advice to go on a diet of no sugar no salt and very few carbs. It's not an emergency but, as someone past the age of fifty, I do have to take care of my daily regime.
As you can imagine, the new situation has put me in a kind of dilemma regarding this blog. I have no wish to give it up although the number of posts has dropped in the past couple of years but, in order to keep sharing recipes of dessert that I actually serve in my house, the general outlook must change. After giving it some thought, I decided that 'a very little bit of apple tart' will focus on the less extravagant recipes from the historic books we know and love to consult and on famous recipes suitably adapted (by me) to a healthier eating plan.
